Diabetic Foot Care
Foot care complications are very common for diabetic patients and we emphasize the control of blood sugar to avoid these problems. Should diabetic foot problems occur, it is imperative that they be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.
Orthotics are shoe inserts that are custom made to fit each patient’s specific needs and to treat painful conditions such as flat feet, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis and neuromas. Orthotics are intended to correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern, by slightly altering the angles at which the foot strikes a walking or running surface.
As an expert foot surgeon, Dr. Potempa takes great pride in his ability to restore proper function to an injured or deformed foot. Ingrown toenails are caused by the growth of the toenail into the surrounding nail fold. Symptoms include pain and swelling at the site. Chronic, painful ingrown toenails can usually be teated, permanently, with a simple procedure that prevents the regrowth of the ingrown portion of the nail.
Heel pain is most often caused by overuse, instead of an injury. Heel pain as a result of overuse can be due to many things, including wearing shoes with poor support, running too often, especially on hard surfaces, sudden turning of your heel, or landing too hard or awkwardly on your heel. There are many types of treatment for heel pain, depending on the severity of your pain, such as home care and wearing special shoes/shoe inserts.
Bunions, Hammertoes, Corns and Calluses
Bunions, hammertoes, corns and calluses are very common conditions. They can be treated on an acute basis which will provide temporary relief or they can be removed permanently.
These infections may start out as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your toenail. As the nail fungus spreads deeper into your nail, your nail may discolor, thicken and develop crumbling edges, causing an unsightly and potentially painful problem. These infections should be treated as soon as possible. If left untreated, they can lead to dangerous blood infections.
